Kavli Institute for Theoretical Sciences

Leadership:
Fu-Chun Zhang, Director
Gang Su, Associate Director
Xiao-Song Chen, Associate Director
Jiang-Ping Hu, Assistant Director

History and Mission:
The Kavli Institute for Theoretical Sciences (KITS) at the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS) is jointly supported by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), UCAS, and The Kavli Foundation. KITS is a reformulated institute, which was founded as the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics, China (KITPC). KITCP started operations in May 2007 and, as one of twenty Kavli institutes worldwide, KITPC played an important role in both promoting China’s research in theoretical physics and organizing international programs in physics and related interdisciplinary fields. KITPC was officially renamed KITS in October 2016.

The mission of the newly reformulated KITS is to establish itself as an international center of excellence in theoretical sciences. KITS is planning to undergo a rapid expansion in its faculty to meet this mission. KITS is engaged in theoretical physics and related interdisciplinary sciences (including biology, chemistry, and earth sciences, etc.), and is an important part for achieving one of the goals at CAS with “integration of research and education”. KITS will continue successful activities of KITPC to sponsor and organize programs and conferences in frontier topics to promote scientific exchange in China and in the world.

The program of KITS will initially focus on theoretical physics and related interdisciplinary fields. The institute is under the leadership of its Director, Prof. Fu-Chun Zhang, and two Associate Directors, Prof. and Vice President Gang Su at UCAS and Prof. and Associate Director Xiao-Song Chen at the Institute of Theoretical Physics, CAS, and Assistant Director, Prof. Jiang-Ping Hu at Institute of Physics, CAS. Its Scientific Advisory Committee will provide guidance in faculty recruitment and institute’s programs. A Governing Board will oversee the management and operation of the institute. KITS will work closely with related institutes in CAS and schools and colleges in UCAS, and will establish network with sister Kavli Institutes and other related centers worldwide, to facilitate the international exchange for academic excellence.

KITS conducts visiting program to host long-term or short-term visitors within China and abroad, and offers fellowship positions for high quality post-doctors. The faculty members in KITS supervise graduate students and share teaching responsibility in UCAS.
