History and Mission:
The Kavli Neural Systems Institute (Kavli NSI) at the Rockefeller University was launched in 2015 as part of The Kavli Foundation’s commitment to the US Brain Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies (BRAIN) Initiative.

Neuroscience is undergoing a convergence with fields such as bioengineering, nanoscience, and computer science that is expected to accelerate in the coming decades. Kavli NSI aims to be at the forefront of that shift, where multidisciplinary teams of scientists will work to develop new tools and novel approaches to meet the very biggest challenges in neuroscience.

The Kavli NSI fosters collaboration among Rockefeller University’s dynamic community of scientists, including faculty, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students. Together, they seek to generate new knowledge about the brain at many levels, from molecules to cells and from circuits to the whole brain. The ultimate goal is to integrate these different neural systems into a comprehensive view of the brain.

The Kavli NSI supports four key initiatives:
Investing in Originality through a Small Grants Program for Individual Projects
Investing in Big Ideas through Funds for Collaborative Projects and Technology Development
Investing in the Future of Neuroscience through Kavli Graduate and Postdoctoral Fellows
Investing in the Kavli Community through Seminars, Symposia, Visiting Scientists
