Professor Dwight Bergles

Director

Dwight Bergles is a professor and Vice Chair of Research in the Solomon H. Snyder Department of Neuroscience at Johns Hopkins University, and holds a joint appointment in the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. He is also currently the Director of the Kavli Neuroscience Discovery Institute and the Multiphoton Imaging Core facility at JHU.

Dr. Bergles received his bachelor’s degree in Biology from Boston University in 1990 and Ph.D. in Molecular and Cellular Physiology from Stanford University in 1995, where he trained with Stephen J Smith. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship with Craig Jahr at the Vollum Institute in Portland, Oregon, before joining the Hopkins faculty in 2000 as Assistant Professor. He was promoted to Professor in 2011. The goal of his laboratory is to understand how interactions between glial cells and neurons influence nervous system development, synaptic function, and neurodegeneration in diseases such as multiple sclerosis (MS).
